Following a string of singles on British and US labels (Toko, Transport, Nordic), Manchester’s Mettle Music release their debut album this month.
“Honeycomb Lounge” is a ten track journey into a British house sounds not so often represented these days. The influences of early releases on Nuphonic, Paper, DIY, and Toko themselves continue through Mettle Music’s Nic Conef and Mark Wadsworth.
Between them, Nic and Mark use their knowledge of house music, music production and live music well, to fuse together the sounds of the guitar, flute & bass into a fine house long player.
“Moodswing” is the dreamy opener- with a lazy sax line and Café Del Mar keys, it leads onto “Silence”, the only vocal track on the record, and the next single to be released from Mettle Music, shortly on Toko. The aptly titled “The Backroom” slows things down to a Nightmares On Wax vein before the very live sounding “The Lowdown” which sounds like the beats from a block party in 70’s New York.
A lot of the tracks go down sweet on the home stereo but the album has several tracks to prove it’s worth on the dancefloor, namely “Slinky Mix” and “Falling”.
Probably more than any other track on the album, “Swell”, as the closing track, typifies the Mettle Music sound. Head nodding house beats, deep keys and all manner of instruments including a very funky live bass all top off the Honeycomb Lounge experience.
Out now on CD/LP on Toko.

This is dark and moody tech-house journey - the first EP from this talented new Dublin producer.
Ron (also known as Ronan O Ciosog) got his Mobile Disco status from a T-Shirt he was given for his first live PA in April of last year. Since then Ronan has been gaining momentum and audience from his regular live appearances around the country, culminating in a headline PA at the Witness music festival in August of this year.
One Louder is Ron's own label so expect more new material to follow.

A diverse debut for this new Irish label with tracks from four producers. Including music from the label founder Darran Nugent ,as Aruba, (see previous review of release on Clear Blu) to more established names from such house hot-spots as Chicago and Paris.
The EP varies from the lazy summer sounds of 'Angels Delight' by Richard Gow to the solid deep house groover that is 'One drop does it' from Brique Rouge man David Duriez. Stand by for the next release, due shortly, from Yann Fontaine.

The long awaited album from these two London based producers, released on double CD, and soon to follow vinyl. Lacarno & Burns (Pete Woolcott & Tim Burns) are names that may not be familiar
to some but their credits are wide-ranging, and their back catalogue smooth and funky.
These boys have most recently released two singles on the Music Is Everything label... "We love the rain" and "Beautiful things", but this follows other releases on Chilli Funk, Good Looking, Nuphonic, and Manchester's Ascension label.
The idea is simple.. organic style house grooves fused with all flavours of jazz, Latin and soul which all merge to give a double CD (CD one is tracks and CD two is mixed.. amounts to over 20 tunes) of glorious foot tapping beats... some with more of a club appeal, others more of a home sound.
Excellent album, and the DHN seal of beatapproval.

This is the debut release from Galway producer Darran Nugent, and it would seem that Aruba will be a name to watch. The main track Beachbum is a mixture of clever percussion, deep and dark sounds, making it a track with instant club appeal. The flip carries mixes from the UKs Mettlemusic and Swedens Andreas Bender which are good but dont satisfy as the original mix. Keep an eye out for Darrans own label which has more good things to offer: http://www.undergroundfiles.com/sound.html |

On a fresh new label out of London, comes releases one and two from theanglo-italian team of Lacarno & Burns. After some stand-up sounds onnuphonic last year, this duo are back more of the same. Where soulful meetsdeep meets jazzy, these are two very sound cornerstones to start building onfor MIE, recommended listening for all. In the words of the release sheet:"..if you don't like this, you're weird." |

The word of Callum Walker spreads far and wide as he lays his distinctivecrisp clean sound on this funky new track from London's East WestConnection. And funk is certainly the order of the day on this 12";retaining all the original keys and sax riffs, the Fresh Juice mix adds ahealthy spring into the track, emerging with an gotta get single. |

The A side on this single has received reasonable coverage and chartingalready, but the flip side on this record is a hidden gem. The track thatdemands your closer attention is 'sunrise on ocean drive', a simple numberof a few jazzy grooves and tasty flute work, but all pieced together so thatyou will be humming it when you are doing the housework. |

From the original track by Sister Sledge you would be forgiven for expectingsome cheesy disco nonsense that we could have done without, but there is alittle more to this record. Here, Swedish R&B collective, Blacknuss havere-created the track without the tired samples from the original. With sweetvocals from Nai-Jee-Ria, and some help from Markus Enochson, this is a verysmooth vocal that fits in nicely next to your Naked Musics and your ChilliFunks. |
