The side A original "Better Day" comes in deep, funky and laced with dirty bass, you know right away it's going to be a real groover. A deep male vocal gives the track an early house sound, along with melodic keys, classic beats and soft synths, perfect for the dance floor. The second Matos track and my fav on the EP, is the A2, "All In The Groove". Upbeat, with old school piano breaks, lots of funky breaks and tantalizing synths, warm from the outside in, building vocals that give it a tropical island feel, each break gets better! For a deeper take on the original, The Rurals give their own take on "Better Day", sweet and deep breakbeats, soft moogs and Marie from The Rurals’ own re take on the vocals that make a more sophisticated sultry number out of the groovalicious original. Finally, Bryan Gerrard picks up the pace with his remix of Matos' "All in The Groove". As the vocals build up and erupt in an anthem style march, we get some sweet string and flutes to really bring out that Island feel.

Dubloner once again melds the fine audio frequencies of dub, techno and house into a pleasingly refreshing EP. "Blurry Udder" starts things off as a nice moody piece, then kicks things up a notch from a swinging dub inspired tune to a straight 4/4 melodic tech house gem. "Wrapper Turnip" keeps a spacey, intriguing and minimal feel to it, with some glitchy samples and a gentle unfolding melody. A nice solid bass line and filtered vocal snippet, the track matures into a nice classic sound. Churning things out, "Confusion Test" is a driving techno jam that urges peak time dancefloor play. Dubloner does a marvelous job merging obscure techno frequencies with a dubbed out bassline. This swinging cut is sure to make the dancefloor do the same.

The Weapons certainly live up to their name alright on "Pete's Sake", with a sweet, get down&dirty track. Tumbling bass, ultra funky beats, sweet breakdowns with a little gentle street rap thrown over. A variety funky elements really make this track come alive, like Motown keys and backroom guitar riffs. Flip over and "Swings The South" gives us some breakbeat style bongos, that give way to some wonderfully warm guitar melodies. Backround voice samples and a sweet sounding trumpet give this record that real summer in the city feel, gentle harp strings and simple melodies, funkalicious. The ep is topped off with a remix of “Swings the South” by Carton, which is a more mellow and bass heavy feel on the original, yet keeping it nice and warm and jazz like with some groovy electronic guitar sounds.

The A1 original is a Latin infused, broken beat, funky delight. Soulful trumpet accompanies the gorgeous two- step soulful melody alongside Kandace Lindesy’s sumptuous vocal. A prefect combination of Latin, soul, jazz and house elements. Up, Bustle& Out provide the rest of the ep with a number of classic retro sounding mixes. Incoporating all the best elements of the original, the Full mix is a 60’s soulful sound meets samba with warm results. The Instrumental is irresistible to move to, while closing the ep with a jazzy dub re work seals the lid on a tin dripping of soul and funk.

First off, what a great record, the funkiest of bass lines and taking us back to hip hop style house. “Moving Up” on the A side is built with funky bongo beats, steady kicks and deep chords with a melody that makes you just want to stomp around with a smile. Seriously, the coolest reverberating bass line and heaven sent melodic harp strings that would melt your heart. A funky rap by Marcellus, over a perfectly sweet pure house tune, complete with flutes, 100% refreshing. Flip over for a more subtle r&b approach to house. “Water For Thirsty Children” again Marcellus takes us on a journey over a back round of trumpets, deep lush keys and soulful synth. “Melodies From Heaven’ another soulful gem, featuring Roy himself on the mic.

Aruba w/ Daniell Spencer and Paul Hughes Remixes
Bodytonic Music

Aruba’s original mix is deep house track with full levels and club peak time in mind. Full of Chicago flavour, a pure ‘jack track’, a soulful gospel vocal shines down while the pace and force of the track picks up to take you to the next level. Next up is Daniell Spencer’s Chicago Mix, Daniell tones it down a notch and adds some funky guitar riffs, sweet synths and re works the vocal to a T. Deep sensibilities that play out to steady beat. Bodytonic boy, Paul Hughes takes over the B-side, first with a ‘Bodytonic remix’. Nice solid beats that break on a synthesized deep meltdown. Warm sweeping keys, deep bass lines and soft sounds, if you like it deep then this is your mix. ‘Soultonic Mix” is next, soft pads, and a solid kick lead the way to an deep and funky little number. Sweet deep bass, funky chords, delicate high hats and melodic synths rise to combine, and result in some serious electric soul. And just incase you want to try for your self, there’s a great acapella added to boot!

It was a pleasant surprise to see this classic label back in the game again and it was even more of a surprise when I listened to the record. The label is still in the hands of founder Ron Trent, so you can still expect nothing but the best taste in house music. Side A- “Deepblack’d” revisits a sentimental era and takes you back a few years and delivers the deep high with a softer touch and flavour. If I am not mistaken, it is a re work of an older track that is literally a masterpiece. This, the 2004 version, steadily builds so gently, some Martin Luther dialogue before arriving in a full finish that’s just deep to the core. If you did not get this in 1995, there’s no time like the present. The B side, ‘You In Love’ is a very different affair. It is a soft, flute infused r&b flava, delivered in old school style. Deep chords, soft broken beats and a soul mending vocal, that makes it sweet to the core.

A 10 track release on Kinetic Records, this outing from Finnish producer Luomo holds that electric pop sound that so much Northern European music does and combines it with elements of house, tech house and electro. While some tracks like ‘Visitor’ are heartfelt vocals and ambient beats, “Talk in Danger’ abstractly soulful while the title track ‘The Present Lover’ is a standout, electric beats and vocal that would transcend in a club, deep bass, funky beats. Other excellent tracks on the album include the more pop orientated ‘Body Speaking’ and ‘Tessio’, what ever he does, it works very well. “So You’ and ‘Could Be Like This’ are more aimed at the dance floor. A great listen and some of these could go great in a club. Really digging ‘What Good’, get’s better with each listen.

A number of Chi- town heads feature on this release, a bumpin’ Latin style funky re- work of the original 1 Note Samba. Vaneesha’s remix is a happy, happy sunshine number, with an amazing re-work of the vocal. Sumptuous sax, bongo and shaker action combined with a Calypso style melody, perfect timing with summer just around the corner. Sean Smith and Dj Pap’s Smooth edit is a chunkier affair, sliced up and thrown back with some effects, to give some tastefully added woomph!

Don't know much about the guys who made this tasty 4 tracker except they come from Cambridge UK area with Cork City roots. The first release on and by Albino Frog Productions gives a great slice of UK house. Remember is made up of minimal chords, a sweet vocal and deep basslines. The overall effect is a very different sounding house track, the old school vocal and bass line really make this for me. Deep Questions is a warmer affair, high hats and a nice solid kick drum, fresh and funky keys, lovely trumpet and warm fx. That Night takes us a little closer to a west coast house sound. Funky beats, high hats and sweet deep rhodes chords. The vocal sweeps in followed by groovy bass lines. Finally , "mindboglin" , marching beats, synths, sweet key action and funky effects make it a real track to get down to.
